I believe that you can place them down next to the door or by clicking on the door itself. I have done this in the past when home owners were in fact not home due to them being killed in a recent raid. They can then pick them up when they return.

Which is a good thing. There should be a proper balance between having to check houses but also being able to hide yourself in plain sight if you want to.
