If they are looking at the road they should see the sign just fine. You would be taking your eyes of the road to look at the speedometer. The moment you enter a road there is a speed limit sign. Speed limits in V6 are much easier to memorize, as opposed to V5, which was a mess.

In my country these would be the appropriate signs if you were coming to the intersection from the fire station.

The arrow signs are supposed to indicate what is the main road. They don't indicate which direction you have to turn.
