It's finally here. The Half-Life 2 RTX is now available. And it's sucks. Demo only. :(

That's....still a lot.

Portal 1 RTX is about 17GB and that's not even a demo.
I don't know how much content there is in the HL2 RTX Demo granted Portal 1 is still pretty short but damn
Portal 1's asset count is much much lower. Its all test chambers with reused textures, and repeated models. Half-Life 2 has a much bigger variety (as well as number in general) of assets, for all of the different areas in the game. Even the stuff that is reused between areas is a much greater amount. Hence the admitidly very large install size for even the demo.

ray tracing soooo overhyped
its not even ray tracing its fully pathtraced

the thing is the original game already does this... it just bakes the lighting down into an image so it isn't realtime

albeit at a super low texel value so it looks horrid compared to 2025, but I can rip the exact same map, bake lighting on it, and have it look identical to the pathtraced result in HL2RTX. people just want Muh Realtime Graphics so much that they don't care if it's running at 1/5th their refresh rate

at least the people that made the assets did a great job...
here's some of the assets being used on a cs map from gamebanana
