Why were you punished?: 3.17 - User confiscated a weapon when it was not safe to do so.
Why should this appeal be considered?: Hi! I'd like to explain my reasoning for confiscating the weapon and why I believe I am not in the wrong here.
The incident occurred when I responded to a situation at Office Complex 5. An officer had pressed their panic alarm and said there were shots fired, so I responded. I got up the stairs, and saw the officer unharmed with a wanted suspect in custody. This is when I saw the gun on the floor, namely, a Springfield M14. I asked if it belonged to the wanted suspect, and got no reply. The officer began to take the suspect downstairs, and I was with another officer. I once again asked if I should take the gun, to which I believe he said yes as he was going downstairs. Regardless, me and another officer were going upstairs. At the time, I didn't know what was happening upstairs, but I followed the other officer, and due to the fact that the gun would have been left unattended to and nobody had come to claim it as theirs, I confiscated it. Now, it was argued in the report that I shouldn't have done that due to being shot 20 seconds later at Office Complex 6, and whilst I understand the point being made, that situation was not happening when I took the gun. If I had to make a guess, I would assume that either suspects were hiding in Office Complex 6 from earlier or they were assisting the person who had been arrested (though he was likely out of the building at the time). The report also argued that somebody dropped the gun as a result of surrendering earlier, however, I wasn't there when this happened, and the suspect wasn't there either way, so this added to why I took it.
I don't have any clips of the situation unfortunately, however, if you require a demo or clip of a demo, let me know and I can provide that.
I'd be more than happy to talk about any of this if needed. Thank you for taking this into account.
