Hey everyone
Today is Transgender Day of Visibility. It is not something I'd usually make a post on, but given the state of things right now, it felt important. As many of you may be aware, over the past few years there have been an increasing number of laws and policies introduced designed to make the lives of transgender and gender diverse individuals harder and less visible. In the last 2 weeks alone there has been the decision from the Olympic Commitee to ban transgender athletes, the decision from Girlguiding in the UK to ban all transgender girls from its organisation, and a bill in Kansas that invalidates the IDs of many of their transgender citizens. I won't go into much detail, you can look into this stuff if you wish, but the point is, thanks to powerful and wealthy hate groups and individuals, the world has become a very scary place for us. I know it is something that I have been struggling with a lot recently.
All of that is to say, this is just a reminder to check in on your transgender and gender diverse friends. There are quite a few of us in this community, and with everything that is going on it can be incredibly overwhelming. Being reminded of the support we have from our friends really can make a massive difference to someone that is struggling. It might seem like a tiny gesture, but sometimes it can mean more than you know to someone who is already feeling scared and alone.
And finally, on a more positive note, a thank you. It is not controversial to say that Garry's Mod is an old game with an old community. One that has kept many of the traits and toxicity prevelent in the gaming community in the mid to late 2000s and early 2010s. Despite that, the community we have here is one that genuinely feels like a safe space for many of us. A place where we can be ourselves without being judged or treated differently. I am personally incredibly grateful that as a community we can create an environment where everyone feels welcome and seen. And I know there is definietly a small group of people here who believe that our server rules on toxicity and discrimination are too harsh, but to those people I want to remind you how that toxicity can affect other people. Maybe it is not the way you think it would affect you, but when someone already has to deal with this kind of stuff in their everyday life, they want a safe space to get away from that. And those things that might not be a "big deal" to you, might be very impactful to someone who already has to deal with it on a regular basis.
Okay that is all I had to say, thank you very much for reading. Go make sure your friends are ok <3
(And this thread will not become any kind of debate on transgender people or any other kind of minority. Positive vibes only please)
