8 gigs, running off a labtop...

6 GB on a Laptop, runs rather well and I never experience any graphical issues nor any lag on Garry's mod. Only time I ever experience any client side issues regarding slower speeds on graphical aspects is on really intensive and demanding games which is pretty much a given. I think your issues may lie outside of the RAM and more into your GPU or CPU, feel free to post your specs here and hopefully someone can help you out.

8gb or ram is more than enough for me to run most games well, but I might download some more soon, head it's free atm.
