The reason behind this is because of the fact that the Metal Detector is already OP as it is, I've spoken to Stephen about this and we both agreed to the fact that it's fine the way it is now, I mean come on you can literally place it behind a wall where you cannot see it walk past it and it goes off, you can't disable it in any way. So basically the main reason why you can't hear the detector going off when there's knives and such is because we have to balance the Detector in some way where something doesn't get detected.
