Punishment Type: Ban
Punishment Subtype: Server Ban
Appeal Type: Apology
Which staff member issued the punishment?: @Vollgas
How long were you banned/blacklisted for?: 2 Months
Your Steam Name: HDRcade[Tyler]
Your Roleplay Name: Gorgan Friedman
Your SteamID: STEAM_0:0:216717823
Why were you punished?: 3.2 - Metagaming | Failing to report
Why should this appeal be considered?: This is my first ban from Perp. I had previously understood metagaming to be doing egregious actions such as screen-sharing/voice comms outside of the game or sharing information and acting on it in ways that break IC knowledge or NLR affecting the game for others - which I completely agree to be unacceptable. This was not the case in this ban.
Myself and most of those involved in this particular case only intended to use Steam Chat for OOC discussions and to keep in contact outside of Perp. Most of us put effort to avoid any information that could affect the game and to rely on in-game comms and rulesets, but in some minority instances, there were those who had sent me messages that would be considered metagaming. I did not act on this information, but I did fail to report to admins - which I realise now I should do. I did not initiate metagaming myself (initiating info in-game within the rules or using chat for OOC purposes) or intentionally via replying to my previous understanding, but I was the recipient of messages.
I will avoid this in the future by disabling Steam chat/Overlay when playing on Garry’s mod or the server. If someone does try to give information that would be considered metagaming, I will warn them and report the behaviour. However I do not want to ‘rat’ on friends or have a rep for doing so, so I will simply not put myself in a position to be caught up in a metagaming scandal again. (I believe I can uncheck the automatic sign-in of the Steam friends feature to disable chat completely while playing so I will test that - thus preventing any kind of occurrence).
I also want to ask leniency for Reiss - in the sit it was brought up that he asked if I harvested - This was slightly taken out of context as at the time of the messaging both of us were not in-game (I had just logged in to Steam) and was in regards to the night before; as he had fell asleep while playing. The answer was no anyway as everything had died before I had got back to base to find him afk that night and was raided soon after. Again, this was something that happened 8-12 hours beforehand and had little to no effect on the game or others' experiences. Reiss had always been a great influence on the do’s and dont’s for me and other newer players and was not involved in my other private steam chats to have knowledge of them (so I don’t understand why ‘failure to report’ was applied to him). I understand now that asking about owning a property is metagaming and again is not something we would repeat in future knowing so. I believe we did not mean to do any of this to intentionally break rules or gain advantage and much of this should have and could have been communicated in-game.
Whilst I agree with being punished to learn from the incident, I did gain a lot of insight from the Discord sit from Vollgas and Phoondas. I feel 2 months is strict for a first offense (yet I understand metagaming can be a very serious issue) and while I was told that for my honesty and conduct I could appeal in a month; with the upcoming release of v6 and as a content creator I feel I would miss a big part of the server history I would have been lucky enough to witness especially as someone who only joined the community a little less than a month ago.
In-game I did try to be a useful part of the community in helping newer players, replying to /help chat responses, offering people advice and services (shop etc.), did my best following the rules (surrendering at gunpoint, even at great loss for example) and never held petty grudges with other players. I paid attention to mod suggestions or warnings as I was learning the game myself and adjusted my behaviours where needed. This is the first time I’ve played an RP server or Garry's mod in general.
I have a lot going on irl and in my personal life (I say this with 38 years of experience; not being dramatic. No cap.) so finding a great community and making many new friends in Perp was a really great thing to have happened for me and I’m very grateful for it.
From this incident, I also had the burden of getting others into trouble, which makes the situation all the worse; had I simply gotten myself banned I could handle that responsibility. I am very lucky they are kind and understanding friends and I hope we all get back to Perp better for it (and even some other games). There is also the embarrassment of the whole thing. This punishment was so much more than a standard ban in that sense, so I have definitely ‘learned my lesson’ and won’t make such a mistake again.
I fully accept if I am made to serve this ban in full or if it is reduced to 1 month as was suggested could happen. I would have waited a month before submitting my apology but it has played on my mind and I took time the last few days to reflect and wanted to get this out of the way. If by some grace you can find it suitable to allow me to be present for the v6 release on 28th or reduce others' sentences, it would be so appreciated (ofc I’d appreciate any amount of reduced time).
Additional Information: Apologies for the lengthy yap.
