I'd recommend you start out with reading the guides HERE - read the ones that interest what type of playstyle you want to have.
As for as success goes, don't be a fucking weirdo in character and just try to make friends. Once you begin networking you can get into a good org and make a name for yourself, the first half is valid if you're wanting to focus on PD-based rp.
