Staff Applications: The Ideal Candidate

Hey everyone,​

So, you're thinking about applying to become a member of the staff team? Below I'll give a few pointers of what an ideal candidate looks like:

  • You need to understand the border between an intentional rule break and a pure accident - Understanding that fine line is something that we thrive to see within candidates.
  • A clear and professional head - Before even accepting candidates we often watch them to see if they act in both a professional manner and have a clear head when dealing with rule breakers, this can be anything from controlling their temper to viewing both sides of a situation so that they can come to a fair outcome that suits both parties. They must also act professional on the forums, the last thing we want is someone who goes around causing issues.
  • Mediation - Much of the role of a staff member is mediation: you will need to be the sort of person that is able to listen, digest, and take action when handling information (this could be seeking further information or asking questions). Above all, you'll need to be efficient at handling a lot of this information, and then using this information to apply the rules fairly.
  • Confidence - All candidates must be confident, they need to be able to frequently discuss any issues with other users aswell as staff members they may not fully know. They also need to be able to work well with a team, as the whole concept is that we're all here to help each other.
  • Open to improvement/feedback - Nobody is perfect, you're expected to get judged one way or another during your time as a staff member, you just have to accept the fact that you will receive positive or negative feedback but you should also be expected to change and fix your mistakes. Another note on this is that candidates must be able to help people as often as possible, we do not want someone who refuses to help other people when asked, doing this doesn't make you an ideal candidate at all.
  • We're all human - As said above, nobody is perfect. If someone is showing genuine improvement despite a bad record some time ago then consider giving a less harsh punishment, it's just a game. How would you feel if you'd be in the users position getting a harsh punishment when your improvement doesn't even get remotely recognised by the staff member punishing you?
