Hello,i have experienced this a lot of times and it keeps getting annoying. Especially in RP moments.

When im opening steam chat by Shift + Tab my gmod just freezes and the sound is bugged(i hear the last sound constantly) and then my screen just goes black. I cant even turn the PC off by pressing the button on the system block so i just have to unplug it.

Had anyone experienced it? It gets annoying,it happened to me like 3 times in RP when i was raiding/getting raided. And it often resulted in my friends getting stuck inside my property.

Pls help

Go into the Steam settings -> In Game -> Overlay Shortcut keys, then change the keybind.

If that doesn't work, just disable it and alt tab to the steam chat app itself and respond there

me and @6tens have the same issue pls help

@Lushi a few things you could try is

- Make sure your gmod is running in windowed borderless either in launch options or in game as @omega said

- try tabbing out in game and turning off and on steam overlay

- updating graphics drivers

- possibly another overlay conflicting with steam overlay (if it happens in other games other than gmod)

- make sure you’re running gmod on the chromium branch

- lastly try verifying integrity of files

If none work I have no idea hopefully one does work for you :)

1. disable steam overlay (most common fix)
  • right click gmod in steam > properties
  • uncheck “enable steam overlay while in-game”
  • launch and test again
2. check your steam beta settings
  • open steam > settings > interface
  • look for “Beta Participation”
  • set it to “None – Opt out of all beta programs”
  • restart steam
    (also check gmod betas too)
  • right click gmod > properties > betas
  • make sure it’s set to “none” unless you're intentionally using a specific one
3. update your gpu drivers
  • go to nvidia / amd / intel’s site
  • get the latest drivers for your graphics card
  • install + restart
4. verify gmod game files
  • steam > right click gmod > properties > installed files > verify integrity
  • this checks for any broken files
5. disable other overlays (discord, geforce, etc)
  • stuff like discord overlay or shadowplay can mess with gmod
  • try turning them off while playing
6. launch options for gmod
try using these in gmod’s launch options: -windowed -noborder -novid -nojoy

7. install / update directx + visual c++ runtimes
