It's been a while since I played this game, but in my opinion it makes sense that if you want to steal someone's drugs, then you'll want to kill the only guy who's guarding them, even if he's unarmed. I mean, if you raid someone's house then you're not just going to leave the owner there and let him call the cops on you. The raider would have a better chance of getting away with it if he killed you, rather than if he let you live. Even if he tied you up and stole your phone, it would still be just a matter of time before you called the cops on him.
