Gmod freezing after 10-30min of playing

Hey everyone,

I've been having some trouble with Garry's Mod lately and I'm hoping someone here might have some insights or solutions. Here's what's been happening:

I initially thought this might be a thermal issue. After cleaning out some dust from my fans, my CPU temperatures are now within normal limits, hovering around 60-70°C. Despite this, I still encounter the classic Source engine freeze after playing for a short while. The game becomes unresponsive, and waiting it out doesn't seem to help.

My PC isn't a gaming beast by any means, but it should be able to run Garry's Mod without issues. I have an Intel Core i7-1225U processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and Intel Iris Xe Integrated Graphics.

I've reduced my subscriptions to only include PERP addons, ensuring no missing textures or conflicts. Graphics settings are set to modest levels, with only the model detail on high.

Has anyone else faced similar issues with this setup or perhaps with similar hardware? Any advice or additional troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any help!

Are you playing on the 64 Bit branch? it could help with your issue.

Yes, in fact I am, but i saw some people saying that switching to 32bit might help? And i read an older post, some guy said typing host_thread_mode 0 into console may solve my issue, i'm gonna try it out next.
Have you tried playing gmod on a SSD presuming it is on a hard drive?

My only storage solution is an SSD, so yes.

64 bit gmod is hardly problematic anymore, if 32 bit works then so be it. I used to encounter constant freezes (though given it was during a time the server had much poorer optimization) and my solution was literally reinstalling windows, but this is obviously a very far fetched solution but if nothing else works then you should give that a consideration.

Just ensure you only have PERP content enabled (including any legacy content you had manually installed in your addons) and your model details in your gmod video settings is set to high. You could try to run the process in high priority mode too through task manager or by adding "-high" in the launch options parameters. Don't use custom cfg's unless you know what you are doing and what it will do.

Update, i have tried 32bit with launch options (-high) and running the command host_thread_mode 0, but it froze again. Then i tried the same, but with the command host_thread_mode 12 (Thread count on my CPU) but that didn't help aswell.

I looked up some tutorial and this person suggested changing the autoexec.cfg settings in garrysmod>cfg to:

mat_queue_mode "0"
mem_max_heapsize "2048"
host_thread_mode "12"
r_threaded_client_shadow_manager "1"
r_threaded_particles "1"
r_threaded_renderables "1"
r_queued_decals "1"
r_queued_post_processing "1"
threadpool_affinity "12"

With these settings the game seemed to run longer, or maybe it's just placebo, but eventually froze again.

I'm out of options currently.

FYI, i'm also running throttlestop with my CPU TDP slightly increased, from the base 10-15 to 20-25 and my GHz caped to 2.8 Ghz instead of boosting to 4.1 Ghz, this is for performance and cooling reasons. My CPU doesn't overheat despite this, and other games run fine, even better than stock.
