I paid 350 for my qc35s, that's just barely out of range

What you need to do is disable the hands free options in your sound devices settings menu. It is defaulting to the Bluetooth handsfree profile, Bluetooth does not have enough bandwidth for clear audio and microphone transmission at the same time. so once it detects that mic it switches profile which requires more bandwidth for the mic, which eats audio quality. Disabling it will prevent switching to that protocol.
it will look like this, just right click the name of ur airpod with hands free behind it, and click disable.

Sneaky is amazing, I got my Airpods working with my PC so no longer need to replace.
