PARALAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT
POLICE DISPATCHERS 101

A police dispatcher is responsible for maintaining the government radio, handling 911 calls and controlling where officers should respond. For an effective team of dispatchers you should be split into several groups. They should work alongside supervisors to make sure officers are performing their duties correctly, dispatchers need to remember that they do not have any authority over any government official, they are there to dispatch, not tell people what and how to do something.

DISPATCHER ROLES

There are 4 roles that are needed to be fulfilled by dispatchers. Ideally, there needs to be 4-5 dispatchers to make sure that everything is running efficiently as possible. Below are the roles which each dispatcher has to take.

Primary Communications
This is the person who is responsible for the government radio, they should assign units and respond to people in the government radio, assigning incident reports from government employees and make sure they are doing their jobs correctly alongside the on-duty supervisors.

Secondary Communications
They should back up the primary communications dispatcher when he or she is busy with something else such as typing up an incident report or assigning units.

Call Handler
Will accept 911 calls and forward the information onto various emergency services to deal with through the incident report system, incident reports should be professional and give a good description of the situation. An example of a good incident report is seen below, it provides a description of what the officers should be looking for and what they are suspected of doing.

Camera Operator
The camera operator is responsible for tracking down suspects through the use of CCTV. They should give updates on incident reports to assist the investigating officers in their task.

RADIO COMMUNICATION

Good radio usage consists of short yet informative messages, an example of good radio usage can be seen below, you can see the messages are short but still provide enough detail for the dispatcher to perform a task.

Remember, the targets callsign must go first, that way they have heard their callsign and are then alert!

<Alpha 1> Dispatch, this is Alpha 1.
<Dispatch> Go ahead Alpha 1,
<Alpha 1> Could you close incident 131 as it is code 4,
<Dispatch> 10-4 I have closed incident 131.

If you have no callsign, you may use your rank then second name, for example, 'Officer Doe'.

Dispatcher Room

The Dispatcher Room is considered an IC channel, since communication with each other in-game is very hard, so using Team Speak 3 is a lot more easier. So all dispatchers on duty should be in this channel and to make things 10 times easier, it's best to have the on duty supervisors on in the channel so they can liaise with the dispatchers.

Radio channels

We have a preferred layout for radio channels when there is a dispatcher(s), we like to stick to this as it stops people from self dispatching and requires them to go through dispatch. In the radio channels, they can only hear people in their radio channel, when they press B it only broadcasts to their radio channel, when they press N it will broadcast to dispatch.

If there is a major incident, then you should patch them all together, just so they can communicate with each other.
