So, I’ve finally moved to my new apartment today…. Hurray the odyssey is over. Unfortunately it turns out that I either have really bad karma, Murphys law decided to show its full force, or my new apartment is cursed.

When I set my Pc up again, my monitor didn’t turn on. Tried for a couple of minutes until I smelled the familiar smell of an electrical fire. Apparently the power adapter and/or plug of the monitor were damaged somehow and it fried the entire thing. So I went and bought a new monitor, easy solution, right?

Nope. Set the new monitor up, connected it to my Pc and…. No signal found. Tried both DisplayPort and hdmi, aswell as all output plugs the pc has to offer. Nothing. Plugged my Nintendo switch into the monitor and connected it via hdmi, immediately connected without issues.

What I failed to realize for a while is, my Pc was connected to my old monitor via a mini DisplayPort cable.

Now, here’s the question: How likely is it that the current traveled through the cable from my monitor to my Pc and fried something? If so, what did it destroy and how fucked am I? Or is it more likely to be something else entirely?

The Pc turns on no problem, I just can’t get any signal on my monitor.

is the GPU actually turning on?
sure you're plugging it into the gpu and not the motherboard?

As far as I can tell the gpu does turn. I’ve plugged it into the same plugs I’ve used ever since I got that pc and it worked without problem, so I’m fairly certain that they are the gpu ones. Just for safeties sake I tried every DisplayPort and hdmi plug I could find and the result is the same: no signal found.

brand new monitor, is it on the correct input? does the monitor actually work?

Here's what I want you to try.

IF you have a spare monitor, used or an old one, plug it in to see if it works.
IF you have a spare GPU lying around (literally any should work), plug it into the PC.

I'm not sure how you packaged your PC and I pray you did remove your GPU as that's what broke mine ages ago.

So i am studying system engineer in the netherlands and i maybe have some solutions for u
1. Try connecting your monitor to the motherboard (it will only work if your cpu has intergrate graphics) if it does boot up that prob means that your GPU is fried.
2. Make sure your pc is actually booting up. for example do you hear the windows sound when you boot up do you see the capslock toggle the LED on your keyboard etc
3. Reseat the GPU: remove your GPU blow out the PCLe slot and then reseat your gpu and make sure everything is good
4. And if u have an spare GPU try connecting that one if that one does work your current GPU is fucked

I checked with my tv because I don’t have another monitor (except the one that suffered the current spike), it worked without problem on that tv before.

I don’t have another gpu unfortunately, I also don’t trust myself to change it.

No, I didn’t remove the gpu before transport. I wrapped my pc like it was an infant though.

I should also add: I know how to turn my computer on and off, so please explain it like I’m a toddler lmao.

Assuming you used the same cables, the same new monitor, it might just be a faulty monitor and I would get that replaced under warranty.

Do this:
If your CPU has intergrated grahpics try to plug in the HDMI cable in the motherboard and if that works your GPU is probably fried and you will need to buy a new one

It's very likely your GPU shuffled around in its socket and is now not making a good connection. You could try re-seating it or using a different PCI slot. Same with your memory.

Like I said, the monitor is what broke first and I already replaced it. Proven to work with my Nintendo switch. The hdmi cable I used with the switch I also tried on my pc and it doesn’t work. Tried 2 out of the box dp cables and it didn’t find a signal with either cable on none of the dp ports.

the motherboard should, which the cpu plugs into.

as I said in dm's I agree with what a few other people are saying, its the GPU. best way to test this with out getting another gpu would be to plug the monitor into the display port on the motherboard and see if that works. if it does work, its a GPU problem

THIS!!

unless you filled inside the case tight, the gpu has likely been dancing around, start basics

Reseat connections and test

look for POST and BEEP codes on the motherboard to give you some kind of indication what is occuring if no video output.

But if he used the same cables for the new monitor doesnt mean the monitor is faulty the old cables are prob fried.
2 brand new dp cables with the monitor. HDMI cable works no problem with the switch and also wasn’t connected to the monitor when it was fried.
